Perhaps now is the best time to reflect on everything that Eurovision has graced our screens with in the last 64 years. In one respect, Eurovision is a wonderful expression of European solidarity, using the power of creativity as a unifying force for reconciliation. This musical hug extends far beyond the borders of the EU — of the 41 countries participating in Eurovision, only twenty-four are in the EU.

Eurovision was originally a telecommunications initiative, rather than a political one.

But as Eurovision continues to expand its horizons, it seems to be experiencing a bad case of mission creep and the musical celebration has started to become hijacked by political agendas. Perhaps not coincidentally, these countries are also the five largest EU budget contributors of the past decade.

The ongoing tension between Europe and Russia has also found a platform on Eurovision. One study notes that these blocs may have formed due to similar cultural traits that result in homogenous music tastes [4] — although another study points out that loyal bloc voting also correlates to countries with less impartial political institutions. Notably, Cyprus regularly awards their douze points to Greece, and Greece responds in kind.

Enosisthe desired political union of Greece and Cyprus so famously and destructively advocated by Bishop Makarios III may still be a political pipe dream, but it is a Eurovision reality. However, I for one would much prefer political wars to be waged by sequinned singers than with fraught rhetoric, political fragmentation and economic disengagement. The latent political subtext of Eurovision can be seen as a healthy pressure valve, a cathartic performance which relieves global political tensions and should therefore be embraced.

This, to me, is why Eurovision is everything. Accessed 17 th March UK Government.

Glittering butterflies, pulsating hearts, shooting stars and swirling dandelions are all staples of this overly earnest festival of love and peace.

A country renowned for its distinctively no-nonsense approach and sharp graphic eye. No pressure. The vexillological colours and shapes clearly reference flags without being literal. Best of all, it eschews typical expectations. Less flattering comparisons have included a hubcap, a pizza and a dartboard, but for me the sequence of shapes could almost contain a hidden message or represent the grooves of a vinyl record. However, it would be remiss to completely adorn the design with praise.

One could accuse it of being a bit safe, still fitting within the framework of the standard Eurovision look and feel, and there must have been more radical proposals left on the cutting room floor. And what about going as far as challenging the Eurovision logo altogether? That handwritten wordmark with the heart at its centre has remained more or less unchanged since Istanbul The reaction so far from fans online seems mostly positive, although there is a noticeable divide between those who appreciate it for its intelligent graphic aesthetic, and those who are left completely cold by its clinically dissected geometry.

Mere weeks after the United Kingdom triggered Article 50 of the EU treaty - which kicked off negotiations over the terms of its exit - London still had some hope of continuing to host the two EU agencies. But it was already to no avail: the 27 remaining EU states would not forgo the opportunity of clinching a prestigious agency.

If you want to know what's happening in Europe today, independent and objective information is crucial. Watch our editor-in-chief Koert Debeuf explain the reasons in this second video. Past discussions on selecting homes for EU agencies had resulted in ugly quarrels between government leaders. A draft version from 19 May, seen by EUobserver, introduced the idea of "objective criteria", which would then be the subject of a neutral "assessment" by Juncker's civil servants.

On 20 June, EU affairs ministers met in Luxembourg to discuss the procedure. Two days later, it was adopted at a summit in Brussels, with a slight change to the timetable. Instead of October, the final ministerial vote was postponed to November.

To emphasise the leaders' unity on the subject, European Council spokesman Preben Aamann tweeted that the debate on the procedure only took four minutes. When signing the rental contract, which does not end untilthe EMA failed to include an exit clause. Meanwhile, several countries had already launched campaigns to promote their candidate cities. Then minister for health, Edith Schippers, said there was "strong competition", and made an analogy to the Eurovision song contest, often echoed by other rivals.

Former finance minister Wouter Bos, appointed as ambassador for the Dutch bid, said he could not remember a time in his career "when a European institution was loved so much, by so many". The deadline for countries to register their bids closed on 1 August.

The month of September saw a promotional spree by most of the 21 EU countries bidding to host the EMA — while the competing countries that wanted to host the EBA took a more stealth-like approach. At its peak, the scramble for the media's attention saw three EMA events a week.

Journalists that attended all presentations were given a total of four kilograms of brochures, as well as souvenirs ranging from small snow globes to mouse pads. Greece even flew several journalists from Brussels to Athens for interviews and a tour of the proposed building. The presentations in Brussels were also attended by representatives from other countries, who were there to check out the competition. Most of them had asked EUobserver for insight on the competition - the latest rumours and evaluations of their own bids.

Everybody is talking to everybody else," said Italian state secretary of European affairs Sandro Gozi. But politics was still the most important game-changer. Following the European Commission's publication of its assessment of the 27 bids to host the two agencies, disappointment was voiced in some corners.

The commission's assessment was little more than a stripped-down version of the countries' original bid presentations, often a summary of what was presented in the bid.

The EU's executive had not fact-checked any of the statements made by member states - to the chagrin of some member states. At a confidential meeting in Brussels, some EU ambassadors criticised the commission's work, saying that the paper it published was "not an assessment".

One diplomat reportedly said: "An 'evaluation' is more than just stapling a number of papers together. During the month, the file moved up the diplomatic ladder, with a ministerial meeting followed by an EU summit of government leaders.

Publicly, politicians said little about the procedure.

However, some did admit that intensive lobbying took place behind-the-scenes at the summit. On 20 November, EU affairs ministers met in Brussels for a series of voting rounds. They first voted on the new seat for the EMA.
